Xi’an opens direct flight to Turkey, a significant development that not only enhances regional connectivity but also marks the city’s very first international direct route to Türkiye. This important connection links two ancient Silk Road cities, Xi’an and Istanbul, and reflects growing ties between China and the wider Eurasian region.

Flight MU5025 Officially Takes Off

At 2:08 a.m. on June 24, China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5025 took off from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. This marked the official launch of a new direct route to Istanbul, Türkiye.

Convenient Schedule for International Travelers

Operated by an Airbus A330, the flight offers a high-quality travel experience with 262 seats onboard. It runs three times a week, on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The outbound flight, MU5025, departs Xi’an at 01:50 and lands in Istanbul at 07:00 local time. The return flight, MU5026, leaves Istanbul at 11:00 local time and arrives back in Xi’an at 01:25 the next day.

This new route is more than just a convenient way to travel, it shows China Eastern Airlines’ commitment to growing its international network and supporting national plans like the Belt and Road Initiative. As Xi’an grows into a major gateway to the west, the new flight highlights its role as the eastern starting point of the Silk Road. At the same time, Istanbul, located between Europe and Asia, continues to serve as a key transportation hub across Eurasia.

Strengthening Trade, Culture, and Tourism

The launch of the Xi’an–Istanbul route is expected to boost economic and trade cooperation, cultural exchange, and tourism between northwest China, Türkiye, the Middle East, and Europe. Passengers can now easily explore Xi’an’s historical wonders and Istanbul’s vibrant blend of Eastern and Western cultures, all on a seamless direct flight.

Looking ahead, China Eastern Airlines plans to expand even further. In July, it will launch two more international routes: Xi’an–Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Xining–Xi’an–Hong Kong. These additions will offer more travel options during the busy summer season.

China Eastern currently operates 18 international routes from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, linking the city to 16 global destinations. As new routes are added, the airport is quickly becoming a major international hub. This is improving Shaanxi Province’s global connections and making it easier for travelers to visit the region.

On June 10, a major milestone in China-Kazakhstan trade was reached with the official opening of the China·Xi’an Kazakhstan Freight Terminal in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This new terminal strengthens direct transport links between Almaty and the existing Kazakhstan Xi’an Terminal in Xi’an, China.

The opening event also marked the arrival of the first China-Europe freight train from Xi’an to Jetysu (Almaty section), showing how this route is becoming a key part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

A Landmark Project for Shaanxi

This is Shaanxi Province’s first overseas logistics hub, built in partnership with Xi’an International Inland Port Investment & Development Group and KTZ Customs Services Company from Kazakhstan. The terminal spans 9.8 hectares (147 mu) and was developed with an investment of $62.1 million.

More than just a train station, the terminal is a modern logistics center that offers:

  • Cargo loading and unloading
  • Storage facilities
  • Transport transfers
  • Exhibition areas
  • Office space

The site includes a 92,000-square-meter terminal and storage yard, designed to handle up to 115,000 TEUs (standard shipping containers) each year. It also features a 1.2 km railway loading line and space to store over 1,100 containers, making it a vital hub for international trade and transportation.

Expanding the Global Logistics Network

At a press conference, Yang Bing, Director of the Xi’an Chanba International Port, shared plans for the future. Xi’an is speeding up the development of new freight terminals in Moscow and Baku, and is also planning projects in Budapest and Minsk.

“Our goal is to build a global network that connects freight trains with overseas warehouses,” Yang said. “We want to create a smart, large-scale logistics system to better support international trade.”

We couldn’t, quite frankly, disagree more! Not only is the city steeped in some serious history but it’s also packed with fabulously quirky corners that adventurous travelers will delight in seeking out. Creative locals are upping their game too, opening funky cafes, cocktail bars and hotels that we couldn’t have even conceived of a couple of years back. All in all, it feels like Xi’an’s having something of a moment, so now is the time to uncover it’s secrets…

mosque hey xi'an

You may have already taken in the well-known Great Mosque but the backstreets of the Muslim Quarter are home to other smaller mosques that are fantastically atmospheric and peaceful. The Daxuexi Mosque, located on a lane of the same name, is a good example and is wonderfully ornate. These are very much active places of worship, not tourist attractions, but in our experience, the custodians are very welcoming to small groups that approach respectfully. Remember to dress modestly and follow the guidelines as the prayer halls are usually off-limits to visitors.

Lively Lianhu Gongyuan has all the goodness of your typical Chinese park: dancing aunties, amateur saxophonists, street calligraphers and the like. But its trump card is a no-irony-intended 1980s style roller rink where disco music blares and gangs of locals in lit-up skates strut their stuff on a nightly basis. Strap on a pair and join the fun, if you dare, or just sit back and indulge in what is almost certainly the best people-watching spot in town.

 Han yang Mausoleum hey xi'an

This excellent museum is a real surprise to many people and makes most sense combined with an arrival or departure at nearby Xi’an Airport. This is the mausoleum of Emperor Jing and Empress Wang of the Han Dynasty and was created around two hundred years after the Terracotta Warriors. Visitors can observe over twenty of the burial pits here directly through the glass floors, each contains hundreds of beautifully crafted miniature terracotta figurines and other items that were buried with the emperor as per the customs of the time.

Xi’an’s signature dish can be eaten all over the city, but we favor tiny Ai Hua Trouser Belt Noodles near Beilin Museum where the thwack of these thick, chewy strips of dough is freshly made to order can be heard all day. The roguish owner banters with diners whilst his wife delivers the delicious noodles in large metal bowls. Overspill seating during rush hours is arranged in a neighboring shed. Proper old school and all the better for it!

The only Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Shaanxi Province lies quietly in the far, north-western corner of the City Wall where it remains (unlike some of Xi’an’s other temples) untroubled by crowds. The relaxed vibes and lovely landscaping make for a great stopover during an extended bike tour along the wall. Vegetarians will find some of the best meat-free dining options near here too.

Shaanxi thirteen ice cream hey xi'an

We quite literally never leave the Muslim Quarter without grabbing a scoop or two here. The Shaanxi Thirteen gang serve up artisanal ice cream made from locally sourced ingredients featuring unique flavors like Old Tofu or Black Vinegar. The staff will give you a taster before you commit, but in our experience, their flavor combos are spot on, and far less scary than they sound! There’s a branch in the Westin Hotel too.

No reservations accepted, so you may need to wait at peak times, but it’s very much worth it, just trust us.

The T5 Terminal of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport’s Phase III expansion project was completed on December 27 and is scheduled to open in February 2025.

New Terminal 5 at Xianyang Airport, Xian, HeyXian

The project was designed to meet the target of 83 million passenger and 1 million tons of cargo and mail moved through by 2030.

The T5 terminal emphasizes cultural heritage and human-centric design, inspired by ancient Chang’an urban planning and the Daming Palace’s Hanyuan Hall from the Tang Dynasty. It currently boasts the largest traditional Chinese architectural commercial complex in a domestic airport in the country.

The complex is located on the 20.5-meter floor of the main building, inheriting the nine-grid chessboard layout of the ancient Chang’an City. It utilizes modern materials and digital construction technologies to recreate the traditional aesthetics of the prosperous Han and Tang Dynasties.

The terminal houses a museum showcasing archaeological artifacts discovered during the various construction phases of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. This is the world’s first museum located within an airport, spanning approximately 6,400 square meters.

The T5 terminal features a “dual-level departure and arrival” model, allowing domestic and international departing passengers to use the same level without needing to change floors. This significantly enhances passenger comfort and travel efficiency.

A multimodal transportation hub was built on the east side of the terminal, linked by an indoor multilevel connection. Terminal 5 is 140 meters from the metro station and 300 meters from intercity rail station, facilitating convenient transfers between air travel and various transportation options like metro, taxis, buses, and shuttles.

The newly completed T5 terminal is currently the first T5 terminal in China, with an area exceeding the combined area of the existing three terminals at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. As a result, Xi’an Xianyang International Airport will become the largest gateway airport in Northwest China.

On December 25, the Information Office of the People’s Government of Xi’an Municipality held a press conference to announce the opening of the Xi’an Metro Line 8. Trial operations for the line commenced on December 26.

Construction of the Xi’an Metro Line 8 began in October 2019 and the line was fully operational by December 2024, marking a construction period of 5 years and 2 months—one of the fastest for a loop metro line in the country. This line is a crucial backbone of Xi’an’s rail transit network and is the only loop line planned for the system. Spanning approximately 50 kilometers and entirely underground, it has 37 stations. Line 8 connects with existing lines at 13 transfer stations, which accounts for 38% of the entire network. This makes it the “King of transfer,” effectively linking the various components of the Xi’an metro network.

Xi’an Metro System Map, Xi’an, HeyXian

Metro Line 8 serves as a vital connection, also referred to as a “golden belt”, spanning between the city’s 2nd and 3rd Ring Roads. It runs through the Yanta, Lianhu, Weiyang, Xincheng, and Baqiao Districts, and links key areas such as the Qujiang New Area, Xi’an High-tech Zone, Xi’an Economic and Technological Development Zone, and Xi’an Chanba International Harbor. This development enables every resident of Xi’an to reach their destinations more quickly and conveniently.

The trains of Metro Line 8 run in a circular route, with the inner loop trains traveling clockwise and the outer loop trains traveling counterclockwise. After entering the station, passengers can distinguish the direction of travel by using the hanging signs above the platform and the route map on the platform screen. The direction can also be determined by checking the next station or passing stations displayed on the platform screen.

After the opening, Metro Line 8 will adopt the unified “distance-based pricing system”. The full-line fare is 6 yuan, and the maximum network fare is 13 yuan. All stations support QR code entry and facial recognition entry.

Xi’an MixC announced its opening with a grand opening ceremony in the presence of government officials, leaders of China Resources Group, CR Land, and CR MixC Lifestyle, as well as architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick. Guests from partners, media and local citizens gathered at the unique new space to witness the grand opening moment and visit the Xi’an Tree, the core landmark of the project.

Xi’an MixC Shopping Mall is a brand new commercial project created by CR Land and CR MixC Lifestyle for Xi’an. This high-end shopping mall integrates traditional culture and modern design, and is combined with Park Hyatt, top office buildings and a collection of apartments to form a future CBD concept complex. The new mall aims to bring more surprises and vitality to Xi’an, creating a new identity for the city.

MixC Shopping Complex, intersection of Yanzhan Road and South Chang’an Road, Xi’an, HeyXian

This mall opened on December 9th at the end of 2024, and features approximately 200 stores, including regional and city-level shops, as well as high-profile concept stores, which together make up nearly 50% of its total offerings. These stores cover luxury fashion, international trends, fine dining, lifestyle, outdoor sports, and jewelry, among others. In terms of dining options, almost 80% of the restaurants have Michelin ratings, are recognized by the Black Pearl list, or are flagship-level establishments, providing residents with a brand-new shopping and dining experience.

With a sprawling 565,000-square-meter area, the complex includes four 150-meter-high buildings and a total commercial floor area of 155,000 square meters. Xi’an MixC is expecting to become a quality lifestyle destination in Xi’an that integrates fashion, art, and culture. It is located at the intersection of Yanzhan Road and South Chang’an Road in the Yanta District in Xi’an, and connected with Metro lines 2 and 8, providing convenient travel experiences for citizens.

As a tribute to the China Resources Land’s 30th anniversary and MixC Commercial’s 20th anniversary, XIi’an MixC collaborated with renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick (Founder and Design Director of Heatherwick Studio) to reinterpret traditional Oriental Garden architecture using contemporary architectural language. Inspired by the thousand-year-old ginkgo tree at the ancient Guanyin Temple in Xi’an, the super city landmark Xi’an Tree has been created to bring a new urban identity for Xi’an city. The Xi’an Tree is 57 meters tall and features 60 giant leaf-shaped extensions. In the future, special performances will also be held around the Xi’an Tree during festivals or significant events.

Xian is an age-old ancient capital in Chinese history.

In the Western Han Dynasty, it was the eastern starting point for the grand Silk Road. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, it became the largest city in the world, and has witnessed Chinese civilization dominate the world. In the 21st century, the world entered into an innovative era, one where technology has become the core engine of urban development.

Although Xian is not the most economically advanced city, it has unparalleled strategic significance politically. In this context, the position of Xian as a city will be re-evaluated.

How will Xian, in the forest of international cities today, find a brand-new place of its own?

Opportunity

The glory days of the Zhou, Qiu, Han, and Tang dynasties are already long gone, and are only a distant memory. In this new era, “hard technologies” reach the sky, and Xian has refreshed its urban image with a technological outlook. Xian has several unique industrial characteristics, scientific research strengths, and talent superiority. The new wave of science and technology is leading to great adjustments in productivity and manufacturing relations, and new industries are constantly emerging, leading the city by science and technology to give Xian modern industries to then bring about new opportunities.

This is a refreshing concept that has not been seen for many years.

Challenges

Having since profited from two significant productivity arrangements, Xian has a solid manufacturing base, and is the country’s strongest military equipment city, housing strong military technology. Especially in the fields of aerospace, nuclear, electronics, ships and weapons, it has obvious leading advantages. However, after China entered into the WTO, Xian missed the mark on policy, the demographic dividend period, and missed the age of internet take-off.

Today, Xian’s top priority is to return to manufacturing traditions, establish the concept of “manufacturing a strong city,” strengthen the real economy, and promote the development of modern manufacturing. In all, the city will have a strong backing.

Regeneration & a New Life

Entrepreneurs are a principal part of innovation. There are very few Xian private enterprises, and they are not particularly strong. Xian needs more, including those with a global strategic vision, to open up the market to entrepreneurial spirit.

Xian, which pioneered the “New Talent Policy,” is facing the challenge of whether it can continue to gain traction. Does the city’s image, “Open up Xian, Innovate Xian, Opportunity Xian” gather talent at the same time? Can it stimulate talent competition?

Autumn in Xi’an is something truly special to behold. As the Fall sets in across our city, we thought we’d share some of the special delicacies, snacks and treats that warm our hearts – perhaps you’ll discover some you’ve never heard of before.

We couldn’t write this post without mentioning the highly regarded jujube, or Chinese date (枣), which can be found across Xi’an. This nutritious nugget is full of nutrients and is eaten for its anti-aging and health-promoting benefits. You may recognize jujube from Xi’an street food stalls as the fragrant ingredient in rice cakes (甑糕). Open your taste buds up to the rich flavors of the season with a plate of fresh dates, perfect as a snack for a moment of indulgence.

Next up: another humble treat Xi’an boasts in plentiful quantities, the walnut (核桃).

Yes, you heard that right. Xi’an locals are proud of this seasonal goodie, and it’s considered the perfect autumn gift, possessing a distinct, refreshing taste. Head to the Muslim quarter, where hawkers roast them by the basketful. Fresh walnuts are both cheap and delicious, so don’t miss out on this traditional treat.

If nuts and dates aren’t your thing, give persimmons a try. Xi’an persimmons are characterized by their crystal-clear, shiny flesh, described by locals as being 软软烂烂的, or ‘soft and sparkling.’ It’s not autumn until you’ve had one.

There are also persimmon cakes made from persimmons in Chang’an Street. In these warming snacks, persimmon paste melts into the fruit’s sweet flesh, mixing into flour and fried in hot oil, blending into a soft texture that is so hot it burns your mouth.

While you’re walking along Chang’an, have a look out for fried chestnuts (糖炒栗子), which always seem particularly tempting. Roasted with sand and sweet syrup, you’ll find vendors frying big batches in woks. Chestnut sand can be made from iron sand, river sand or quartz sand. All of these are used, but nowadays, most of them are made from quartz sand. Some well-known old chestnut shops have long queues at their entrances, following a long tradition.

Peel a sweet fried chestnut along the way home.

If that isn’t sweet enough for you, a stick of sugar cane (一串儿糖葫芦) should go down a treat. In order to satisfy everyone, they come in different flavors, and there are many different kinds, such as hawthorn with walnuts, dried fruit, olives, and hawthorn with sticky melon seeds sprinkled on top, all of which look highly appetizing. The candy store colors and fruity glaze are sure to remind you of more simple pleasures.

Xi’an locals are fond of this next one, which is less widely available nowadays: water chestnuts (菱角). When in season, you will see women carrying frames with which to buy them, most often at the entrances to towns and villages. They are found in greater numbers further south in wider Shaanxi. Nonetheless, locals born and bred here may remember being given bags of water chestnuts to enjoy as a kid.

And if you’re a meat lover, braised lamb stew is sure to tickle your taste buds. Soaked in a yolk-colored broth, the dish is both hearty and comforting. This dish, created by Shaanxi people, offers affordable nourishment and seasonal warmth. Notes of sharp pepper and onion burst into a unique aroma, topped off with a little balsamic vinegar, which coats the lamb head to create a chewy, fragrant experience. It’s the signature of Shaanxi.

Hot tofu brains anyone? 热腾腾的豆腐脑 – before all you vegetarians and vegans exit this article, you might just find this minimalist morning staple quickly adopted into your own breakfast, whether you choose to pair it with youtiao or baozi. A hot bowl early in the morning will warm you up so you’re ready to take on the day. Tender, watery, and bursting with delicious soy-based flavors – you have to give it a go this season.

Lastly, no trip to Xi’an is complete without a comforting bowl of biang biang mian, whose characters are so intricate that they often can’t be typed out and are not available on computers. You may recognize it from phonetic substitutes such as 彪彪面 (biaobiaomian) or 冰冰面 (bingbingmian), which are more widely used instead. Calligraphic complexity aside, it’s clear that a bowl of these are unmissable. Locals advise going to the South Gate in particular to really hunt down the best. As one guy told us, “a bowl of noodles – that’s what Xi’an is.”

We hope you’ll enjoy the best of what Xi’an has to offer this Autumn. Equipped with this list, you’ll be able to explore to your hearts content, just like a local.
