Xi’an Xianyang International Airport Terminal 5 to Open

The T5 Terminal of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport’s Phase III expansion project was completed on December 27 and is scheduled to open in February 2025.

The project was designed to meet the target of 83 million passenger and 1 million tons of cargo and mail moved through by 2030.

The T5 terminal emphasizes cultural heritage and human-centric design, inspired by ancient Chang’an urban planning and the Daming Palace’s Hanyuan Hall from the Tang Dynasty. It currently boasts the largest traditional Chinese architectural commercial complex in a domestic airport in the country.

The complex is located on the 20.5-meter floor of the main building, inheriting the nine-grid chessboard layout of the ancient Chang’an City. It utilizes modern materials and digital construction technologies to recreate the traditional aesthetics of the prosperous Han and Tang Dynasties.

The terminal houses a museum showcasing archaeological artifacts discovered during the various construction phases of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. This is the world’s first museum located within an airport, spanning approximately 6,400 square meters.

The T5 terminal features a “dual-level departure and arrival” model, allowing domestic and international departing passengers to use the same level without needing to change floors. This significantly enhances passenger comfort and travel efficiency.

A multimodal transportation hub was built on the east side of the terminal, linked by an indoor multilevel connection. Terminal 5 is 140 meters from the metro station and 300 meters from intercity rail station, facilitating convenient transfers between air travel and various transportation options like metro, taxis, buses, and shuttles.

The newly completed T5 terminal is currently the first T5 terminal in China, with an area exceeding the combined area of the existing three terminals at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. As a result, Xi’an Xianyang International Airport will become the largest gateway airport in Northwest China.

Xi’an Metro Line 8 Officially Opened

On December 25, the Information Office of the People’s Government of Xi’an Municipality held a press conference to announce the opening of the Xi’an Metro Line 8. Trial operations for the line commenced on December 26.

Construction of the Xi’an Metro Line 8 began in October 2019 and the line was fully operational by December 2024, marking a construction period of 5 years and 2 months—one of the fastest for a loop metro line in the country. This line is a crucial backbone of Xi’an’s rail transit network and is the only loop line planned for the system. Spanning approximately 50 kilometers and entirely underground, it has 37 stations. Line 8 connects with existing lines at 13 transfer stations, which accounts for 38% of the entire network. This makes it the “King of transfer,” effectively linking the various components of the Xi’an metro network.

Metro Line 8 serves as a vital connection, also referred to as a “golden belt”, spanning between the city’s 2nd and 3rd Ring Roads. It runs through the Yanta, Lianhu, Weiyang, Xincheng, and Baqiao Districts, and links key areas such as the Qujiang New Area, Xi’an High-tech Zone, Xi’an Economic and Technological Development Zone, and Xi’an Chanba International Harbor. This development enables every resident of Xi’an to reach their destinations more quickly and conveniently.

The trains of Metro Line 8 run in a circular route, with the inner loop trains traveling clockwise and the outer loop trains traveling counterclockwise. After entering the station, passengers can distinguish the direction of travel by using the hanging signs above the platform and the route map on the platform screen. The direction can also be determined by checking the next station or passing stations displayed on the platform screen.

After the opening, Metro Line 8 will adopt the unified “distance-based pricing system”. The full-line fare is 6 yuan, and the maximum network fare is 13 yuan. All stations support QR code entry and facial recognition entry.

Xi’an Kindergartens to Open on June 8

As the last batch of students (and even more parents) eagerly wait to return to school, the Xi’an Municipal Education Commission announced on May 27, that qualified kindergartens in Xi’an will be able to gradually reopen, starting from Monday June 8th.

5月27日上午，西安市教育局发布《关于做好2020年春季学期幼儿园开学工作的通知》，通知中提到， 6月8日（星期一）起，西安市具备开园条件的幼儿园可陆续开学。

Kindergartens may choose their opening date upon approval from the district education department. The notice states that parents can voluntarily choose whether they want their children to return to kindergarten. Children who decided not return to the kindergarten this semester can retain their degrees and no fees will be charged.

幼儿园具体时间由各区县（开发区）根据实际情况统筹安排。尊重家长意愿，实行自愿返校，本学期不返园幼儿保留学位，不收取费用。

符合条件开放的幼儿园必须遵守由国家卫生健康委员会和教育部制定的疫情防控指南。西安教育局还公布了系列准则，包括当地教育部门和幼儿园需要遵守的预防措施。

Now that Xi’an and other cities like Chengdu have announced start dates for the rest of their students, this is a good indication of when school will open in other provinces. Note that the kindergarten’s summer vacation dates have not been announced yet.

随着西安和成都等城市宣布了新的的开学日期，更多地方也会进一步开放校园。不过，幼儿园的暑假日期目前还未知。

COVID-19: What’s Closed (and Open) in Xi’an

[Updated April 14] To prevent the spread of the coronavirus in Xi’an, lots of touristic spots and business are also closed till further notice. All events and public gatherings are cancelled, and this will still take a while.

Restaurants and bars have re-opened, though have to apply and take precautions in order to get permission. These depends on which district, though usually include measurements like registration, temperature check upon entry, 1.5meter distance between tables, limited number of people in the venue, among others.

It is a really crucial time to come together as a community, and support the local businesses that we love. Or they will disappear forever.

Schools

According to the latest official information of the Chengdu Education Bureau, the opening schedule of schools in Chengdu is as follows:

• High School 12th grade: March 30

• Junior school 9th grade, Secondary vocational school Senior grade: April 7

Other grades, international schools, special education schools, and kindergartens start date will be determined at a later date, but will be no earlier than April 7th. The order for reopening schools shall be: other grades of middle and high school – primary schools – international schools – special education schools – kindergartens.

The start date for colleges and universities will be announced at a later date, depending on the current epidemic situation at that time.

The Ministry of Education accounced that the Gaokao (the unified examination for the admissions of colleges and universities) is postponed to July 7-8.
