Xi’an is preparing to welcome one of Northwest China’s biggest transportation hubs as Xi’an East Railway Station is officially scheduled to open in June 2026. As of June 15, 2026, the station’s full interior and exterior finishing has been completed, all operational systems have passed joint testing, and the station is now fully ready for operation.

The new station is expected to become a major gateway for both domestic travelers and tourists visiting Shaanxi Province. Located in eastern Xi’an, the project is designed as a comprehensive transportation hub that combines high-speed rail, conventional rail, metro connections, buses, and urban transit systems in one location. Once opened, Xi’an East Railway Station will significantly improve travel efficiency across central and western China.

The station is designed with 17 platforms and 35 railway lines, making it one of the largest railway stations in Northwest China. According to transportation planning reports, the hub will connect passengers to several important destinations through new and existing high-speed rail routes. Expected major connections include Beijing, Wuhan, Chongqing, Chengdu, Yan’an, Shiyan, and other key cities across Shaanxi, Hubei, and Sichuan provinces.

One of the most anticipated routes linked to the station is the Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway, which is planned to operate at speeds of up to 350 km/h. The station will also integrate with Xi’an Metro Line 5 and future metro expansions, allowing travelers to transfer easily between rail and city transportation systems.

Officials expect the station to handle tens of millions of passengers annually after opening. Beyond transportation, the new hub is expected to boost tourism, business activity, and regional economic development while making travel to Xi’an’s famous attractions even more convenient for visitors from across China.

With final preparations now completed, Xi’an East Railway Station is entering its final countdown before officially welcoming passengers later this month.

Xi’an Metro Line 15 (Phase I) is advancing rapidly, connecting key stations like Yinghua Square and Xi’an University of Posts & Telecommunications. Spanning 19.459 kilometers, it will link Gaoxin, Chang’an, and Hangtian districts upon completion. This will extend Xi’an’s metro network to 422 kilometers, serving as a benchmark for rail transit capability with its driverless operation and fully underground stations.

Xi’an Metro Line 15’s Type A trains are China’s “large-capacity model,” offering 15% more passenger space per car than the typical Type B, due to a 0.2-meter width increase. A six-car setup accommodates up to 1,608 passengers. With speeds of 100 km/h—25% faster than standard trains—the journey from Xiliu to Dongzhaoyu takes just 30 minutes, significantly reducing travel time between Chang’an University City and the Aerospace Base.

From the start, Xi’an Metro Line 15 (Phase I) emphasized smooth integration with existing lines. Key interchange stations—Guoduxi (Line 6), Aerospace City (Line 2), and Dongchangan Street (Line 4)—feature “passage + node interchange” modes, with the shortest transfer being just 50 meters. As an “innovation corridor,” Line 15 connects Chang’an University City and the Aerospace Base, linking educational and research hubs like Xi’an University of Posts & Telecommunications with aerospace industrial parks.

Xi’an Metro Line 15 (Phase I) is set to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2025. As the opening nears, this high-capacity, high-speed line promises to boost development in southern Xi’an with its deep engineering and strong connectivity.

On 30 November 2022, construction of the Xi’an East Railway Station project officially began, with the station building construction starting on 9 May 2023. Then, on July 1st, the main concrete structure of Xi’an East Railway Station was successfully topped out. This marks a significant step in the development of this key transport hub in Northwest China. Located in Xi’an’s core business district, the station will combine high-speed rail, conventional rail, metro, and bus services, creating a seamless travel experience for millions of passengers.

Size, Structure, and Capacity

The station covers 394,000 square meters, with the building itself occupying about 100,000 square meters. It features three main levels: the Arrival level, Departure Platform, and an Elevated Waiting Hall, along with mezzanines to handle passenger flow efficiently. The yard includes 13 platforms and 27 tracks, serving several key rail lines such as the Xi’an–Chongqing High-Speed Rail, Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Rail, and Xi’an–Ankang Conventional Rail. Space is also reserved for future intercity routes and maintenance facilities.

Boosting Connectivity and Regional Growth

Expected to handle 36.5 million passengers annually, Xi’an East Railway Station will ease pressure on the existing Xi’an railway hub and support the city’s expanding transportation needs. It will complement Xi’an North Railway Station, which mainly serves northern routes, by focusing on connections to central and southwestern China. Together, these stations will strengthen Xi’an’s role as a major transportation center.

Additionally, the station will also link to Metro Lines 5, 12, 15, and 21, allowing smooth transfers between rail and urban transit. Moreover, the surrounding area is set for industrial upgrading and urban development, making Xi’an East a new economic hub in the city’s eastern district.

Xi’an opens direct flight to Turkey, a significant development that not only enhances regional connectivity but also marks the city’s very first international direct route to Türkiye. This important connection links two ancient Silk Road cities, Xi’an and Istanbul, and reflects growing ties between China and the wider Eurasian region.

Flight MU5025 Officially Takes Off

At 2:08 a.m. on June 24, China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5025 took off from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. This marked the official launch of a new direct route to Istanbul, Türkiye.

Convenient Schedule for International Travelers

Operated by an Airbus A330, the flight offers a high-quality travel experience with 262 seats onboard. It runs three times a week, on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The outbound flight, MU5025, departs Xi’an at 01:50 and lands in Istanbul at 07:00 local time. The return flight, MU5026, leaves Istanbul at 11:00 local time and arrives back in Xi’an at 01:25 the next day.

This new route is more than just a convenient way to travel, it shows China Eastern Airlines’ commitment to growing its international network and supporting national plans like the Belt and Road Initiative. As Xi’an grows into a major gateway to the west, the new flight highlights its role as the eastern starting point of the Silk Road. At the same time, Istanbul, located between Europe and Asia, continues to serve as a key transportation hub across Eurasia.

Strengthening Trade, Culture, and Tourism

The launch of the Xi’an–Istanbul route is expected to boost economic and trade cooperation, cultural exchange, and tourism between northwest China, Türkiye, the Middle East, and Europe. Passengers can now easily explore Xi’an’s historical wonders and Istanbul’s vibrant blend of Eastern and Western cultures, all on a seamless direct flight.

Looking ahead, China Eastern Airlines plans to expand even further. In July, it will launch two more international routes: Xi’an–Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Xining–Xi’an–Hong Kong. These additions will offer more travel options during the busy summer season.

China Eastern currently operates 18 international routes from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, linking the city to 16 global destinations. As new routes are added, the airport is quickly becoming a major international hub. This is improving Shaanxi Province’s global connections and making it easier for travelers to visit the region.

On June 10, a major milestone in China-Kazakhstan trade was reached with the official opening of the China·Xi’an Kazakhstan Freight Terminal in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This new terminal strengthens direct transport links between Almaty and the existing Kazakhstan Xi’an Terminal in Xi’an, China.

The opening event also marked the arrival of the first China-Europe freight train from Xi’an to Jetysu (Almaty section), showing how this route is becoming a key part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

A Landmark Project for Shaanxi

This is Shaanxi Province’s first overseas logistics hub, built in partnership with Xi’an International Inland Port Investment & Development Group and KTZ Customs Services Company from Kazakhstan. The terminal spans 9.8 hectares (147 mu) and was developed with an investment of $62.1 million.

More than just a train station, the terminal is a modern logistics center that offers:

  • Cargo loading and unloading
  • Storage facilities
  • Transport transfers
  • Exhibition areas
  • Office space

The site includes a 92,000-square-meter terminal and storage yard, designed to handle up to 115,000 TEUs (standard shipping containers) each year. It also features a 1.2 km railway loading line and space to store over 1,100 containers, making it a vital hub for international trade and transportation.

Expanding the Global Logistics Network

At a press conference, Yang Bing, Director of the Xi’an Chanba International Port, shared plans for the future. Xi’an is speeding up the development of new freight terminals in Moscow and Baku, and is also planning projects in Budapest and Minsk.

“Our goal is to build a global network that connects freight trains with overseas warehouses,” Yang said. “We want to create a smart, large-scale logistics system to better support international trade.”

These are very much active places of worship, not tourist attractions, but in our experience, the custodians are very welcoming to small groups that approach respectfully. Remember to dress modestly and follow the guidelines as the prayer halls are usually off-limits to visitors.

Lianhu Park & Crazy Roller

[kleo_divider type=”full|long|double|short” double=”yes|no” position=”center|left|right” text=”” class=”” id=””]

Lively Lianhu Gongyuan has all the goodness of your typical Chinese park: dancing aunties, amateur saxophonists, street calligraphers and the like. But its trump card is a no-irony-intended 1980s style roller rink where disco music blares and gangs of locals in lit-up skates strut their stuff on a nightly basis. Strap on a pair and join the fun, if you dare, or just sit back and indulge in what is almost certainly the best people-watching spot in town.

Han Yang Mausoleum

[kleo_divider type=”full|long|double|short” double=”yes|no” position=”center|left|right” text=”” class=”” id=””]

 Han yang Mausoleum hey xi'an

This excellent museum is a real surprise to many people and makes most sense combined with an arrival or departure at nearby Xi’an Airport. This is the mausoleum of Emperor Jing and Empress Wang of the Han Dynasty and was created around two hundred years after the Terracotta Warriors. Visitors can observe over twenty of the burial pits here directly through the glass floors, each contains hundreds of beautifully crafted miniature terracotta figurines and other items that were buried with the emperor as per the customs of the time.

Xi’an’s signature dish can be eaten all over the city, but we favor tiny Ai Hua Trouser Belt Noodles near Beilin Museum where the thwack of these thick, chewy strips of dough is freshly made to order can be heard all day. The roguish owner banters with diners whilst his wife delivers the delicious noodles in large metal bowls. Overspill seating during rush hours is arranged in a neighboring shed. Proper old school and all the better for it!

Guangren Temple

Guangren Temple hey xi'an

The only Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Shaanxi Province lies quietly in the far, north-western corner of the City Wall where it remains (unlike some of Xi’an’s other temples) untroubled by crowds. The relaxed vibes and lovely landscaping make for a great stopover during an extended bike tour along the wall. Vegetarians will find some of the best meat-free dining options near here too.

Shaanxi thirteen ice cream hey xi'an

We quite literally never leave the Muslim Quarter without grabbing a scoop or two here. The Shaanxi Thirteen gang serve up artisanal ice cream made from locally sourced ingredients featuring unique flavors like Old Tofu or Black Vinegar. The staff will give you a taster before you commit, but in our experience, their flavor combos are spot on, and far less scary than they sound! There’s a branch in the Westin Hotel too.

This charismatic market at the foot of the City Wall is raring to go from 6am, making it a great option for early risers that want to see – and taste – some local flavor. Winding its way through narrow streets than contain homes, mosques, kindergartens and more, this is where residents come to pick from a vast array of fresh local produce whilst snacking on freshly baked breakfast goodies sold by street-side hawkers.

This charming little eatery is hidden in plain sight down a narrow alleyway just off the Shuyuanmen Market area. Grab a seat in the outside courtyard and order up a storm: pretty much everything is tasty here, but the edible paintbrushes with dipping ‘ink sauce’ are a fun appetizer (and a great photo op). No reservations accepted, so you may need to wait at peak times, but it’s very much worth it, just trust us.

Finding worthy hands to entrust your locks into can be a complicated process even without a language and culture barrier. We often have to resort to bringing a photo of the style we want or headshots from a few angles of our last good cut in order to communicate our desired effect to the stylist. People have been known to scope out good places by watching the work in action and the results for a bit before committing. Asking the stylist for photos of their work can also be a good way to judge someone’s handiwork.
We are pretty fortunate in that fashion conscious Xi’an has a wealth of options at many price ranges, from neighbourhood spots where the basic xi-jian-chui (wash, cut, dry) service runs 20-50RMB to luxury salons that charge several hundred yuan per visit. It’s time to go to the hairdressers!

Appointments at neighbourhood spots are usually not taken, as customers are cared for on a first-come-first-served basis, so it pays to time visits to a popular salon during off hours. Higher-end salons usually have a sliding scale where services by less experienced stylists come at a bargain and the most experienced stylists come at a premium. You can also expect dye or perm services to cost quite a bit more than the basic cut. Several salons offer memberships or cards that can shave a good percentage off your bill; if you find a good place that you intend to visit regularly, this is usually well worth it.
Below are a few good places in town to get you started:

In the following dynasties, the palace was repaired and expanded for several times, given the name of “Hot Spring Palace” and finally denominated “Huaqqing Palace” by Emperor Tangxuanzong. The palace was constructed above hot springs, hence the site is also called “Huaqing Hot Springs”.

After a fire during WWII almost burned the factory to the ground, a series of renovations were undertaken, thus giving it a mixed aesthetic of Gregorian and postwar architecture. Since then, it has taken on a different life as a museum and shopping center but fails to attract visitors, thus leaving it in a state of disarray and making it the perfect location for you to visit and soak-up the historic culture surrounding this historic site!
