The T5 Terminal of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport’s Phase III expansion project was completed on December 27 and is scheduled to open in February 2025.

New Terminal 5 at Xianyang Airport, Xian, HeyXian

The project was designed to meet the target of 83 million passenger and 1 million tons of cargo and mail moved through by 2030.

The T5 terminal emphasizes cultural heritage and human-centric design, inspired by ancient Chang’an urban planning and the Daming Palace’s Hanyuan Hall from the Tang Dynasty. It currently boasts the largest traditional Chinese architectural commercial complex in a domestic airport in the country.

The complex is located on the 20.5-meter floor of the main building, inheriting the nine-grid chessboard layout of the ancient Chang’an City. It utilizes modern materials and digital construction technologies to recreate the traditional aesthetics of the prosperous Han and Tang Dynasties.

The terminal houses a museum showcasing archaeological artifacts discovered during the various construction phases of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. This is the world’s first museum located within an airport, spanning approximately 6,400 square meters.

The T5 terminal features a “dual-level departure and arrival” model, allowing domestic and international departing passengers to use the same level without needing to change floors. This significantly enhances passenger comfort and travel efficiency.

A multimodal transportation hub was built on the east side of the terminal, linked by an indoor multilevel connection. Terminal 5 is 140 meters from the metro station and 300 meters from intercity rail station, facilitating convenient transfers between air travel and various transportation options like metro, taxis, buses, and shuttles.

The newly completed T5 terminal is currently the first T5 terminal in China, with an area exceeding the combined area of the existing three terminals at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. As a result, Xi’an Xianyang International Airport will become the largest gateway airport in Northwest China.

On December 25, the Information Office of the People’s Government of Xi’an Municipality held a press conference to announce the opening of the Xi’an Metro Line 8. Trial operations for the line commenced on December 26.

Construction of the Xi’an Metro Line 8 began in October 2019 and the line was fully operational by December 2024, marking a construction period of 5 years and 2 months—one of the fastest for a loop metro line in the country. This line is a crucial backbone of Xi’an’s rail transit network and is the only loop line planned for the system. Spanning approximately 50 kilometers and entirely underground, it has 37 stations. Line 8 connects with existing lines at 13 transfer stations, which accounts for 38% of the entire network. This makes it the “King of transfer,” effectively linking the various components of the Xi’an metro network.

Xi’an Metro System Map, Xi’an, HeyXian

Metro Line 8 serves as a vital connection, also referred to as a “golden belt”, spanning between the city’s 2nd and 3rd Ring Roads. It runs through the Yanta, Lianhu, Weiyang, Xincheng, and Baqiao Districts, and links key areas such as the Qujiang New Area, Xi’an High-tech Zone, Xi’an Economic and Technological Development Zone, and Xi’an Chanba International Harbor. This development enables every resident of Xi’an to reach their destinations more quickly and conveniently.

The trains of Metro Line 8 run in a circular route, with the inner loop trains traveling clockwise and the outer loop trains traveling counterclockwise. After entering the station, passengers can distinguish the direction of travel by using the hanging signs above the platform and the route map on the platform screen. The direction can also be determined by checking the next station or passing stations displayed on the platform screen.

After the opening, Metro Line 8 will adopt the unified “distance-based pricing system”. The full-line fare is 6 yuan, and the maximum network fare is 13 yuan. All stations support QR code entry and facial recognition entry.

Guests from partners, media and local citizens gathered at the unique new space to witness the grand opening moment and visit the Xi’an Tree, the core landmark of the project.

Xi’an MixC Shopping Mall is a brand new commercial project created by CR Land and CR MixC Lifestyle for Xi’an. This high-end shopping mall integrates traditional culture and modern design, and is combined with Park Hyatt, top office buildings and a collection of apartments to form a future CBD concept complex. The new mall aims to bring more surprises and vitality to Xi’an, creating a new identity for the city.

MixC Shopping Complex, intersection of Yanzhan Road and South Chang’an Road, Xi’an, HeyXian

This mall opened on December 9th at the end of 2024, and features approximately 200 stores, including regional and city-level shops, as well as high-profile concept stores, which together make up nearly 50% of its total offerings. These stores cover luxury fashion, international trends, fine dining, lifestyle, outdoor sports, and jewelry, among others. In terms of dining options, almost 80% of the restaurants have Michelin ratings, are recognized by the Black Pearl list, or are flagship-level establishments, providing residents with a brand-new shopping and dining experience.

With a sprawling 565,000-square-meter area, the complex includes four 150-meter-high buildings and a total commercial floor area of 155,000 square meters. Xi’an MixC is expecting to become a quality lifestyle destination in Xi’an that integrates fashion, art, and culture. It is located at the intersection of Yanzhan Road and South Chang’an Road in the Yanta District in Xi’an, and connected with Metro lines 2 and 8, providing convenient travel experiences for citizens.

As a tribute to the China Resources Land’s 30th anniversary and MixC Commercial’s 20th anniversary, XIi’an MixC collaborated with renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick (Founder and Design Director of Heatherwick Studio) to reinterpret traditional Oriental Garden architecture using contemporary architectural language. Inspired by the thousand-year-old ginkgo tree at the ancient Guanyin Temple in Xi’an, the super city landmark Xi’an Tree has been created to bring a new urban identity for Xi’an city. The Xi’an Tree is 57 meters tall and features 60 giant leaf-shaped extensions. In the future, special performances will also be held around the Xi’an Tree during festivals or significant events.

‘So, I’ve heard there’s nothing to do in Xi’an apart from the Terracotta Warriors…’

We couldn’t, quite frankly, disagree more! Not only is the city steeped in some serious history but it’s also packed with fabulously quirky corners that adventurous travelers will delight in seeking out. Creative locals are upping their game too, opening funky cafes, cocktail bars and hotels that we couldn’t have even conceived of a couple of years back. All in all, it feels like Xi’an’s having something of a moment, so now is the time to uncover it’s secrets…

Hidden Mosques

mosque hey xi'an

You may have already taken in the well-known Great Mosque but the backstreets of the Muslim Quarter are home to other smaller mosques that are fantastically atmospheric and peaceful. The Daxuexi Mosque, located on a lane of the same name, is a good example and is wonderfully ornate. These are very much active places of worship, not tourist attractions, but in our experience, the custodians are very welcoming to small groups that approach respectfully. Remember to dress modestly and follow the guidelines as the prayer halls are usually off-limits to visitors.

Daxuexi Mosque:94 Daxuexi Alley, Lianhu District.

Lianhu Park & Crazy Roller

Lively Lianhu Gongyuan has all the goodness of your typical Chinese park: dancing aunties, amateur saxophonists, street calligraphers and the like. But its trump card is a no-irony-intended 1980s style roller rink where disco music blares and gangs of locals in lit-up skates strut their stuff on a nightly basis. Strap on a pair and join the fun, if you dare, or just sit back and indulge in what is almost certainly the best people-watching spot in town.

Crazy Roller:18 Lianhu Road, Lianhu District (inside the northwest corner of Lianhu Park).

Han Yang Mausoleum

 Han yang Mausoleum hey xi'an

This excellent museum is a real surprise to many people and makes most sense combined with an arrival or departure at nearby Xi’an Airport. This is the mausoleum of Emperor Jing and Empress Wang of the Han Dynasty and was created around two hundred years after the Terracotta Warriors. Visitors can observe over twenty of the burial pits here directly through the glass floors, each contains hundreds of beautifully crafted miniature terracotta figurines and other items that were buried with the emperor as per the customs of the time.

Han Yang Ling Museum: Airport Express East Section, Weicheng, Xianyang.

后街BiangBiang面

Back Alley Noodle

Xi’an’s signature dish can be eaten all over the city, but we favor tiny Ai Hua Trouser Belt Noodles near Beilin Museum where the thwack of these thick, chewy strips of dough is freshly made to order can be heard all day. The roguish owner banters with diners whilst his wife delivers the delicious noodles in large metal bowls. Overspill seating during rush hours is arranged in a neighboring shed. Proper old school and all the better for it!

Ai Hua Trouser Belt Noodles: 20 Anju Lane, Beilin District. Tel (+86) 139 9188 9513.

Guangren Temple

Guangren Temple hey xi'an

The only Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Shaanxi Province lies quietly in the far, north-western corner of the City Wall where it remains (unlike some of Xi’an’s other temples) untroubled by crowds. The relaxed vibes and lovely landscaping make for a great stopover during an extended bike tour along the wall. Vegetarians will find some of the best meat-free dining options near here too.

Guangren Temple: 152 Xibei 1st Road, Lianhu District

Shaanxi Thirteen Ice Cream

Shaanxi thirteen ice cream hey xi'an

We quite literally never leave the Muslim Quarter without grabbing a scoop or two here. The Shaanxi Thirteen gang serve up artisanal ice cream made from locally sourced ingredients featuring unique flavors like Old Tofu or Black Vinegar. The staff will give you a taster before you commit, but in our experience, their flavor combos are spot on, and far less scary than they sound! There’s a branch in the Westin Hotel too.

The Medicine Shop Speakeasy

Medicine shop speakeasy hey xi'an

Locals generally prefer beer over cocktails, but even salt-of-the-earth Xi’an is not immune to the charms of the modern speakeasy. Push through what appears to be (wink wink) a Chinese medicine store to find yourself in the welcoming environs of whiskey bar The Cirque, and treat yourself to one of the best-mixed drinks in town.

The Dongcangmen ‘Early Market’

This charismatic market at the foot of the City Wall is raring to go from 6am, making it a great option for early risers that want to see – and taste – some local flavor. Winding its way through narrow streets than contain homes, mosques, kindergartens and more, this is where residents come to pick from a vast array of fresh local produce whilst snacking on freshly baked breakfast goodies sold by street-side hawkers.

Zui Chang’an

This charming little eatery is hidden in plain sight down a narrow alleyway just off the Shuyuanmen Market area. Grab a seat in the outside courtyard and order up a storm: pretty much everything is tasty here, but the edible paintbrushes with dipping ‘ink sauce’ are a fun appetizer (and a great photo op). No reservations accepted, so you may need to wait at peak times, but it’s very much worth it, just trust us.

Tianshuijing Catholic Church

This still-active church dates back 300 years, a testament to Xi’an’s cosmopolitan history. The building is an appealing blend of western and Chinese architecture including murals painted in a beautiful style specific to Shaanxi Province. The watchman is usually happy to let people explore at leisure, or if you are in town on a Sunday see if you can join a service.

Finding worthy hands to entrust your locks into can be a complicated process even without a language and culture barrier. We often have to resort to bringing a photo of the style we want or headshots from a few angles of our last good cut in order to communicate our desired effect to the stylist. People have been known to scope out good places by watching the work in action and the results for a bit before committing. Asking the stylist for photos of their work can also be a good way to judge someone’s handiwork.
We are pretty fortunate in that fashion conscious Xi’an has a wealth of options at many price ranges, from neighbourhood spots where the basic xi-jian-chui (wash, cut, dry) service runs 20-50RMB to luxury salons that charge several hundred yuan per visit. It’s time to go to the hairdressers!

Appointments at neighbourhood spots are usually not taken, as customers are cared for on a first-come-first-served basis, so it pays to time visits to a popular salon during off hours. Higher-end salons usually have a sliding scale where services by less experienced stylists come at a bargain and the most experienced stylists come at a premium. You can also expect dye or perm services to cost quite a bit more than the basic cut. Several salons offer memberships or cards that can shave a good percentage off your bill; if you find a good place that you intend to visit regularly, this is usually well worth it.
Below are a few good places in town to get you started:

Swire Properties announced on 4th March that it will partner with Xi’an Cheng Huan Cultural Investment and Development Co., Ltd. (“Xi’an Cheng Huan Cultural”), a state-owned subsidiary of Xi’an Qujiang New District Management Committee, to develop Taikoo Li Xi’an. This will be the fourth iteration of their retail development series, Taikoo Li and the company’s seventh development in China.

The project was announced after the two companies successfully acquired (via government land tender) a site for commercial development in Beilin District of Xi’an, at a total price of RMB 2,575 million (US$407 million). The two companies will form a joint venture to develop the site as a retail-led mixed-use development, in which Swire Properties and Xi’an Cheng Huan Cultural will each hold a 70 percent and 30 percent interest respectively. The total investment for this new development is expected to be approximately RMB 10 billion (US$1.58 billion). Xi’an becomes the fifth city in the Chinese Mainland in which Swire Properties has a business presence, following successes in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.

Swire Properties will collaborate with Xi’an Cheng Huan Cultural to develop an urban regeneration plan for the area.  Located at the Small Wild Goose Pagoda historical and cultural zone in Beilin District, Xi’an in Shaanxi Province, the site will be developed into a retail-led project featuring an innovative low-rise, open-plan architectural design that exemplifies the brand DNA of Taikoo Li, and will comprise retail and cultural facilities in addition to a luxury hotel, serviced residences and business apartments.

With an estimated gross floor area (GFA) of 269,218 square metres (above and below ground), this will be Swire Properties’ fourth Taikoo Li in the Chinese Mainland, following the successful development of Taikoo Li Sanlitun in Beijing, Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu and Taikoo Li Qiantan in Shanghai. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

“As we celebrate Swire Properties’ 50th anniversary in 2022, we are very pleased to have secured our first major investment in Xi’an which testifies to our confidence in Xi’an and our long-term commitment to the Chinese Mainland,” said Tim Blackburn, Chief Executive of Swire Properties. “As a UNESCO World Heritage site we recognise the significance of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda historical zone and its importance to the city of Xi’an, and we’re excited to bring our Taikoo Li brand to this stunning location. We intend to apply all our expertise and experience in urban regeneration and placemaking to create a vibrant new landmark in Xi’an – a world-class destination which promises to enhance the commercial charm and influence of Xi’an both nationally and internationally.”
